Every year, during the month of July, many parts of the world celebrate Disability Pride Month: an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of disability, the importance of rights, and the value of building a truly inclusive society.<\/span><\/p>\n It is not simply a celebration. Disability Pride Month exists as a reminder that the rights of people with disabilities are the result of decades of commitment, advocacy, and activism \u2014 and that the journey towards full participation in society is still evolving.<\/span><\/p>\n The choice of July is not accidental. On July 26, 1990, United States President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), one of the most important laws protecting people with disabilities from discrimination.<\/span><\/p>\n The ADA represented a turning point for civil rights, introducing measures to ensure equal opportunities in access to employment, education, transportation, public spaces, and services.<\/span><\/p>\n Since then, July has become a symbolic month for disability pride and awareness, marked by events, initiatives, and movements led by people with disabilities around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n The word \u201cpride\u201d carries a meaning that goes beyond celebration.<\/span><\/p>\n Disability Pride does not mean being proud of disability itself.
